OPEC to appoint new Secretary General

The ministers of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) held a meeting on Monday to discuss the appointment of a new secretary general.

Haitham al-Ghais, a former Kuwaiti representative to OPEC, is the only candidate for the role, OPEC sources have said.

He resigned as Kuwait’s representative to OPEC in June 2021 and was appointed Deputy Director in charge of international marketing at the state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC).

Current OPEC Secretary General Mohammad Barkindo of Nigeria is due to step down at the end of July once his second three-year term ends.
