Phumtham Praises Thai Army’s Disaster Response and Advocates for Enhanced Equipment

BANGKOK: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, conducted an official inspection of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, commending the unit's swift disaster response capabilities and advocating for improvements in military equipment to address future challenges. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham's visit included an acknowledgment of the Royal Thai Army's missions and achievements, as well as policy direction to motivate personnel. He was received by General Songwit Noonpakdee, the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, and other senior military officials. During the visit, Mr. Phumtham paid respects at the monument of King Naresuan the Great and reviewed the honor guard of the combined armed forces. He was briefed on the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters' missions for the fiscal year 2025 and later visited the International Counter-Terrorism Operations Center. There, he received information on counter-terrorism strategies, emphasizing coord ination between the armed forces and the Royal Thai Police, aligned with the National Readiness Plan and the policies of the Ministry of Defense and the National Security Council. Mr. Phumtham also inspected the Army Development Command, which showcased efforts in public assistance and infrastructure development, including transportation routes, water source development in border areas, and disaster relief. The tour included a view of military equipment such as multi-purpose patrol vehicles and various fire trucks, alongside demonstrations of humanitarian mine operations by the National Mine Action Center. Following the inspection, Mr. Phumtham emphasized two main issues: disaster response policy and personnel restructuring. He highlighted the Royal Thai Army's prompt assistance during disasters, such as in Chiang Rai Province, and the integration of efforts with relevant agencies. He noted the need for equipment adaptation in response to new natural threats, like those in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where t here is a shortage of essential equipment. The Royal Thai Army has plans for comprehensive disaster prevention operations, including border areas. Personnel restructuring was also discussed, with Mr. Phumtham asserting that adjustments are necessary to align with evolving threats. He mentioned the importance of adapting technology and resources to meet changing global situations. He proposed allowances to support personnel aiding in disaster relief to boost morale. Mr. Phumtham expressed confidence in the Royal Thai Army's capabilities, emphasizing the need for ongoing improvements in efficiency, personnel development, and equipment enhancement.
