PM attends logistics forum for agricultural development

VGP PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc attend a forum on Developing international market for vegetables and fruits, logistics system for agricultural and rural areas on December 18 in Dong Thap province.

The large-scale forum is part of an investment conference which is scheduled for December 19 with a view to seeking solutions to agricultural development. Earlier, the Viet Nam Organic Agriculture Development and Integration was convened on December 16 in Ha Noi.

Agriculture is one of the important export areas of Viet Nam, contributing largely to export turnover. In 2011-2016, agricultural exports expanded yearly by 12.7%. In 2016, Viet Nam had over 30 export markets worth over US$ 1 billion each.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development estimated that as of late November 2017, export turnover fetched US$ 33.14 billion, representing a year-on-year growth 13.8%. In 2017, overseas shipment of the agro-forestry-fishery sector valued at US$ 36 billion including ten groups of exports with over US$ 1 billion market scale.

Despite abundant potentials, agricultural exports especially vegetables and fruits coped with numerous obstacles. Experts attributed the products' weak competitiveness to poor logistics development. Statistics showed that Viet Nam is among countries with extremely high logistics costs, marking it difficult for domestic products to go to foreign markets.

According to a list of the World Bank in 2016, Viet Nam ranked 64th out of 160 countries in logistics development, falling from the position of 48th in the 2014 rankings. Viet Nam was at the fourth place after Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand in regional logistics development. Experts pointed out Viet Nam's weaknesses in logistics performance index (LPI) namely logistics competence, infrastructure, tracking and tracing.

The forum is expected to offer a good chance for delegates to share experience in making orientations and solutions to develop international markets for vegetables and fruits; and extricate logistics obstacles for Vietnamese agricultural products./.
