PM: Vietnam is willing to work with China, other countries to promote trade, services, digital economy

-Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered a speech at the 2021 Global Trade in Services Summit via video co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Beijing municipal administration on Thursday evening. 

Applauding the summit’s theme “Digitalization opens the future, Services promote development”, the Prime Minister said that in the context of countries being affected by the synergistic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and resource depletion, promoting international cooperation in digital technology will be a key to helping countries shift growth models for sustainable and inclusive development.

The Prime Minister said that as a dynamic developing economy in ASEAN with great potential for digital economic development, Vietnam is ready to join China and other countries in promoting trade in services in general and the digital economy towards openness, respect, equality and mutual benefit, contributing to the development of each country and bringing practical benefits to the region and the world.

Prime Minister  Pham Minh Chinh made five specific proposals:

“First, countries need to take advantage of digital transformation to accelerate the fulfillment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030. Second, strengthening the role of international cooperation agreements on digital technology so that the digital economy develops strongly and in the right direction on the basis of a combination of common interests of the whole society. Third, attention should be paid to cooperation in education and training of human resources in science and technology, thus supporting laborers to gradually adapt to digital technology. Fourth, promoting the role of digital technology in trade facilitation, especially the movement of goods by multimodal transport, facilitating people’s travel, and ensuring the supply chain is not disrupted amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, countries need to strengthen cross-border e-commerce on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, thereby helping promote exports.”

The 2021 Global Trade in Services Summit saw the attendance of Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping. It was part of China International Fair for Trade in Services held from Sept 2 – 7 in Beijing. This year’s Fair is the largest of its kind with the participation of more than 700 enterprises and consists of 15 related conferences and forums. This is the first time Vietnamese enterprises participate in both offline and online formats.
