President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation on Tuesday leave Vietnam for a state visit to Cambodia at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni from December 20-21. This is the first visit to Cambodia by Mr. Phuc as President of Vietnam, making him the first high-ranking Vietnamese leader to officially visit Cambodia in the past two years since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.

The visit aims to implement the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress to show respect and develop relations with neighboring countries. The visit takes place when the traditional friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia have been developing well.

The two countries have regularly conducted meetings at all levels. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the leaders have maintained online contacts.

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s state visit to Cambodia is one of the first events to start a series of activities to celebrate the friendship year and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (June 24, 1967 – 2022).
