Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc meets Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

VGP - Viet Nam always treasures traditional friendly relations and cooperation for mutual benefit with Iran, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said at a meeting with visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Ha Noi on October 6.

He congratulated the Iranian president and people on their country being removed from some international sanctions and reaching a comprehensive nuclear deal with the P5+1 group, adding that these events would open up new prospects for bilateral cooperation that need to be tapped by both sides for the development of each country and the benefits of their people.

The PM voiced his pleasure at the outcomes of the talks between the guest and President Tran Dai Quang as well as the agreements reached between the two sides, expressing his belief that President Rouhani's visit would continue to open up a new chapter in bilateral ties.

He pledged to direct Vietnamese agencies to work closely with the Iran side in implementing the agreed commitments, towards soon realizing the goal of bringing two-way trade to US$2 billion in the future.

The host suggested both sides boost commodity imports and exports; introduce partners to their respective businesses to facilitate the exchange of strength products; and lift the rice trade relations to the government level for stable and long-term cooperation.

He also urged the two countries to remove difficulties concerning payment mechanisms aiming to promote two-way trade, and accelerate cooperation in the fields of information technology and telecommunications towards making the area a breakthrough in bilateral relations.

PM Phuc asked the Iranian side to continuously support the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) in restarting the oil exploration project in Danan Block, and approve a necessary time extension for PVN to complete the commitments in the contract.

Viet Nam has already signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership and two free trade agreements (FTA) with the Republic of Korea and the Eurasian Economic Union, and is preparing for the signing of an FTA with the European Union, he said, hailing this as a good opportunity for foreign investors, including those from Iran, to expand business in the country.

With regards to the East Sea issue, PM Phuc asked Iran to continue backing the maintenance of peace, stability, and aviation and navigation security and safety; the peaceful settlement of disputes in line with international laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC); and prompt finalization of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) in 2017.

Through President Rouhani, PM Phuc extended his regards to Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri and invited him to visit Viet Nam.

For his part, President Rouhani affirmed that his visit demonstrated Iran's senior political will in promoting relations with Viet Nam.

He suggested the two sides accelerate realization of the agreements signed and the contents reached at the eighth meeting of the Viet Nam-Iran Inter-governmental Committee in Ha Noi.

The guest highlighted Iran's strengths and expressed his wish to cooperate with Viet Nam in the fields of energy, oil, steel, agriculture, culture and tourism. The Danan oil exploration project awarded to PVN in Iran is a symbol of cooperation between the two countries, he added.

At the meeting, both sides agreed to assign their trade and industry ministries to compile a bilateral free trade agreement and research the launching of a maritime transport route between Viet Nam and Iran.
