Russia warns of retaliation for US withdrawal from INF
Russian officials on Wednesday warned of retaliation for the US decision to abandon the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF).
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced at a NATO meeting Tuesday that the US will suspend its obligations under the INF in 60 days. He said a six-month notice period for leaving the treaty will begin if no change is made.
In a televised statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin said if the US starts developing new intermediate range missiles, Russia will respond in kind by building its own new weapons. That, however, is exactly what the Trump administration argues Russia has already done, in violation of the treaty.
