South Korea reconfirms plan to deploy US missile defense system

South Korea's Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo Ahn on Monday reconfirmed a plan to deploy an advanced US missile defense system, aimed at better coping with threats from North Korea.

During Monday's press conference, Mr. Hwang said the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system is a self-defensive measure that is absolutely needed to protect national security and people's lives. He added North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile threats are not potential threats, but clear existential threats. Hwang is serving as acting president while the Constitutional Court deliberates parliament's impeachment of President Park Geun Hye for her political scandal relating to her friend Choi Soon-sil.
