South Korea, US, Japan condemn North Korea missile launch

Special envoys for nuclear issues of South Korea, the US, and Japan spoke by telephone on Friday and voiced their objections to North Korea’s launch of two short-range ballistic missiles earlier the same day.

South Korea’s foreign ministry said North Korea’s nuclear and missile development will only lead to strengthening security cooperation in the region and abroad.

South Korea’s National Security Council (NSC) said North Korea’s latest missile launch was escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the region, adding that its military is prepared to respond immediately to any provocation by the North.

The launches did not pose an immediate threat to the US or its allies, the US military’s Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement, noting that the launches highlighted the “destabilizing impact” of North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
