South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol began an official visit to Japan on Thursday for a summit with PM Fumio Kishida. The two-day visit is the first bilateral visit by a South Korean president to Japan since 2011.

Kim Sung-han, Yoon’s national security adviser, said the visit shows that bilateral relations have entered a new stage of improved normalized ties.

The two leaders will discuss measures to normalize bilateral relations, remove policy barriers hindering economic cooperation, and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.

Yoon is set to hold high-level talks with Kishida on Thursday to discuss the Joint Security Agreement on Military Information, a military intelligence-sharing pact, and lifting restrictions on Japanese components exported to South Korea.

During his visit Yoon will meet with members of the Japan-Korea Parliamentary Union and the Korea-Japan Cooperation Committee, hold a business roundtable with the two countries’ major entrepreneurs, and speak with Japanese and Korean students at Keio University.

Tokyo is considering inviting President Yoon to attend the G7 Summit in Hiroshima next May. Korea said it is willing to arrange for Yoon to attend the summit. If Yoon attends, Kishida may organize a Japan-US-Korea trilateral summit with US President Joe Biden’s participation.
