Southeast Asia grapples with COVID-19

The Delta variant first detected in India is now spreading rapidly in Southeast Asia.

On Sunday, Malaysia and Thailand announced the highest number of new infections in a single day. Malaysia recorded 17,045 new infections, Thailand had 15,335 new infections. Malaysia’s total COVID-19 caseload passes 1 million mark

Indonesia, Philippines, and Myanmar continued to record a large number of new daily infections, 38,679 cases, 5,479 cases and 4,998 cases respectively. Indonesia now has surpassed India and Brazil to become the country with the highest number of daily cases in the world.

According to the WHO, if 5% of the tests are positive, it means the pandemic is out of control. In Indonesia, the figure was more than 10% for about 16 months in the early stage of the pandemic and is now over 30%. It is therefore very likely that a  super spreader variant emerges.
