Spain offers to host COP25 climate change summit

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Thursday said he held a phone call with Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, where Sanchez offered to host the UN's COP25 climate change summit in Madrid as previously scheduled, between December 2 and 13.

Pinera said he hopes Spain's generous offer represents a solution, adding that Chile has shared the information with the leading authorities at the UN.

Earlier, Chile withdrew as the host nation of the climate change summit and APEC amid raging street protests there.

Chile has been in serious social crisis following the increase of metro fares by President Pinera's administration. The demonstrations which have lasted for 11 days have quickly swelled into a much broader protest against inequality and the cost of living.

Clashes between protestors and police have claimed the lives of 20 people, injured hundreds of others. More than 3,000 people have been arrested.
