VGP – Thailand’s imports of Vietnamese tra fish in 2014 jumped 25% on-year, according to the latest statistics from the General Department of Viet Nam Customs.

As of the end of last year, Thailand’s importation of Vietnamese tra fish ranked second among the ASEAN countries.

Among the many factors contributing to the increase was a rise in an average price to US$2.14 per kilo in 2014 from US$2.1 per kilo in 2013.

In the first eleven months of last year, Thailand’s tra fish imports from Viet Nam were estimated at US$40.5 million, accounting for 97% of the total market share of frozen fish fillet imports.

Thailand is a potential market and a gateway for Viet Nam to expand tra fish exports to other ASEAN markets with an estimated total population of more than 600 million people.

While tra fish exports to ASEAN, the third largest importer after the Europe Union (EU) and the United States (US), posted growth, exports to the EU dropped by 7.3 % over that of the same period last year to US$220 million.

Currently, the EU was the country’s biggest tra fish importer, accounting for 21 % of total tra fish export turnover.
