Trump says Russia should be at G7 meeting, Moscow not so sure

Russia should be attending the G7 summit in Canada, US President Donald Trump said on Friday, a controversial idea that even Moscow seemed to reject.

President Trump is attending the G7 summit in Canada where other leaders are set to clash with him over trade. Trump's suggestion of readmitting Russia was unlikely to gain any traction at the gathering of the group that includes the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, Italy, France, and Germany. Meanwhile, a Kremlin spokesman said Russia is focused on other formats, apart from the G7.

At the summit, the US and the EU agreed to establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, signaling a modest step forward for bitterly divided allies. Trump struck a more affable tone after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, saying the French leader was helping work out trade issues. He said something very positive is going to happen without giving details. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker offered to visit Washington for an assessment of EU-US trade to help resolve the dispute.
