Ukraine seeks ‘unconditional support’ for its plane crash investigation

Ukraine on Thursday called for unconditional support of its investigators after a Ukrainian passenger plane crashed in Iran, with US media reporting that it was accidentally shot down by a missile.

Addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in New York City, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya said the facts of this catastrophe are still unclear. He said it is up to experts to investigate and answer the question what caused the crash.

The Ukraine president's office said in a statement that if any country has information that can help a transparent and objective investigation of the tragedy, they are ready to receive it and cooperate in further verification.

The same day, Iran formally invited the US National Transportation Safety Board to take part in its investigation of the crash and the agency agreed to assign an investigator, an Iranian official said on Thursday. Iran also informed other nations about the situation, including Ukraine and Canada.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a day of national mourning in Ukraine on Thursday for the 176 victims.
