UN envoy optimistic about Syria talks in Geneva

The UN envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura said on Tuesday he hopes the talks set to begin next week in Astana and the G20 Summit in Germany will create favorable conditions for the next round of talks in Geneva.

Speaking prior to consultations with the UN Security Council, Mr. De Mistura said the ideal trajectory over the coming two weeks would be progress in Astana on July 4-5, then further technical aspect meetings with opposition groups in the same week, and then continued dialogue among the main international stakeholders including at the G20 summit in Hamburg on July 7-8. He said he hopes the combination of these elements will shape a conducive environment for the next round of talks in Geneva later on.
