UN Security Council approves ceasefire plan for Syria

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution welcoming a ceasefire in Syria brokered by Russia and Turkey.

Russia submitted a plan to the UN Security Council on Friday supporting a ceasefire in Syria as well as a plan for peace talks in Kazakhstan next week between the Syrian government and opposition. Clashes, shelling and air raids in western Syria marred the truce on Friday shortly after it went into force at midnight on Thursday. The ceasefire involves Syrian government forces and 7 opposition groups with about 60,000 gunmen.
