US calls for Germany’s greater involvement in fighting IS

The US on Sunday called for Germany to send ground troops to northern Syria, pressing Berlin to ramp up its military involvement in the fight against the Islamic State as Washington looks to withdraw from the region.

US special representative for Syria James Jeffrey told German media in Berlin that the US wants ground troops from Germany to partly replace its soldiers in the area. He said allies need to provide technical support for the Kurdish-led opposition but troops would not necessarily be required to engage directly in fighting with the Jihadi group.
