US calls on G20 to step up climate action

(VOVWORLD) – US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Friday called on her G20 counterparts meeting in Venice to take urgent action to decarbonize the global economy and tackle climate change.

She said that the Group of 20 richest countries are responsible for 80 percent of global carbon emissions, so it is their responsibility to take action immediately.

She also emphasized the importance of increased international cooperation to avoid “friction” between different countries trying to reduce their greenhouse gases.

The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting is the third meeting during Italy’s G20 Presidency and the first in person meeting since February 2020.
