US Defense Secretary makes surprise visit to Afghanistan

US Defense Secretary James Mattis met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during an unannounced visit to Kabul on Friday to discuss prospects for peace talks with the Taliban and deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan.

They discussed the peace process, positive impacts of the South Asian strategy, activities to reform the Afghan National Defense and Security Force (ANDSF), upcoming elections, and counter-terrorism campaign and dialogue with Pakistan.

Mr. Mattis expressed his hope for peace talks with Taliban, saying the chance of resuming negotiations was clearer.
