US Embassy in Cuba resumes processing of immigration visas after 5 years

The United States Embassy in Cuba on Monday began issuing visas for the first time in nearly five years after an interruption due to alleged sonic attacks against its diplomatic personnel. The US is currently prioritizing “IR-5 applicants (parents of US citizens)”. The plan is to expand US consular services in Cuba.

For the past 5 years, Cubans who wanted to enter the US have had to go to a third country like Colombia or Guyana to obtain a visa, increasing costs and risks. Many people choose to instead migrate illegally.
