US renewed sanctions against Iran take effect

The first round of renewed US sanctions on Iran has taken effect, prohibiting Iran's purchase of US dollars and precious metals, aluminum, steel, coal and software.

A second tranche of US sanctions on Iran, set to come into effect in November, targets Iran's energy sector and petroleum-related transactions, and transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.

Farhan Haq, a UN spokesperson, said on Monday that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to view the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Iran and the P5+1, as a diplomatic achievement and encourages support from all governments.
