US Secretary of State kicks off Southeast Asia trip

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Malaysia late on Thursday, starting a five-day, three-country visit to denuclearize the North Korean peninsula and ease US-China trade tensions.

Pompeo is scheduled to meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and attend a Saturday meeting in Singapore with diplomatic representatives from 26 countries and the EU to discuss regional security and economic interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

Officials said Pompeo will shore up pressure on Pyongyang to eliminate North Korea's weapons by urging the implementation of UN sanctions. Mr. Pompeo will end his Southeast Asia trip after visiting Indonesia.
