Vietnam and Luxembourg strengthen comprehensive partnership cooperation

Vietnam and Luxembourg have agreed to establish a strategic partnership framework for green finance to support Vietnam’s inmplementation of its national green growth strategy and combat climate change.

During talks between Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Luxembourg counterpart Xavier Bettel during the former’s official visit to Luxembourg on Friday, they called for fully and effectively implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, accelerate logistics connectivity while stepping up the signing of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement.

 

The Vietnamese Prime Minister asked for Luxembourg’s support for Vietnam’s exports to the country and EU and encouraged Luxembourg investment in Vietnam. He suggested Luxembourg help Vietnam build an international financial centre in Ho Chi Minh City. He urged other EU countries to soon ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement and back the European Commission’s early removal of “yellow card” warning against Vietnamese aquatic products.

 

Prime Minister Bettel expressed his support for the EU’s ratification of the EVIPA, saying that Luxembourg businesses are ready to cooperate with and assist Vietnam in the fields of circular economy, banking, securities and climate finance.

 

Both leaders agreed to expand coordination in national defence-security, fight against transnational crimes, cyber security, digital transformation, culture, tourism, education-training, and transport.

 

On the East Sea issue, they reaffirmed the importance of ensuring peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea, refraining from the use or threat to use force, settling disputes by peaceful means in line with international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

 

The same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with President of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg Fernand Etgen. The Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to the role and position of Luxembourg in the European Union, and wants to further promote the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, including between the two law making bodies.
