Vietnam, Australia strengthen security ties

Security cooperation between Vietnam and Australia has been strengthened by the Australian Defense Force agreeing to help Vietnam deploy a peacekeeping contingent to South Sudan.

An article by Brendan Nicholson, Defense Editor of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's website, "The Strategist" quoted Defense Minister Marise Payne as saying that Australian teachers in Vietnam are helping the staff of a field hospital reach the United Nations' English proficiency standard.

Australia will provide Vietnam with equipment worth 300,000 USD, including large tents and generators.

Vietnam plans to deploy peacekeepers to South Sudan for training within 12 months. Vietnam also hopes to send police officers and civil specialists to participate in other UN missions.
