Vietnam, EU work toward free trade agreement

European Union (EU) members want to expand cooperation with Vietnam through the earliest possible signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU-Vietnam Investment Promotion Agreement (EVIPA).

Meeting Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh in Brussels on Wednesday, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia MalmstrAlm lauded Vietnam for ratifying the International Labor Organization (ILO)'s Convention 98 and amending Vietnam's Labor Code. The two sides discussed cooperation frameworks and opportunities and challenges facing Vietnam and its EU partners in expanding and improving bilateral economic, trade, and investment ties. Vietnam, EU countries, and Trade Commissioner MalmstrAlm are stepping up efforts to complete the signing of the EVFTA later this month in Hanoi.

Belgium was part of Minister Anh's trip to some EU countries, including Romania, Italy, and Spain this week.
