Vietnam-Laos Joint Declaration

Vietnam and Laos have issued a joint declaration following the official visit to Laos by Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong from Thursday to Saturday.

The declaration says that Party chief Nguyen Phuc Trong held talks with General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of Laos Bounnhang Vorachith, met with Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, NA Chairperson Pany Yahthotu, and visited many former senior leaders of the Lao Party and State.

Mr. Trong talked with students, lecturers, and educational staff at the National University of Laos and visited a number of economic and cultural facilities in Vientiane.

During talks, both sides agreed to enhance political relations, maintain regular meetings among senior leaders of the two Parties, and governments, continue to consolidate and improve the efficiency of cooperation mechanisms, and expand cooperation and mutual assistance among sections of the two Parties, ministries, and National Assembly committees, Fatherland Fronts, civil organizations, and localities. Both sides will work closely together to mark the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and 40 years of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.

Vietnam and Laos agreed on increasing coordination to uphold the strengths of each side, implement cooperation agreements between the two governments, and cooperation programs among ministries, sectors, and provinces.

Both sides agreed on strengthening cooperation in defense, and security to stabilize political, security, and social order in each country, carrying out cooperation agreements on defense and security, increasing coordination in the management, and building of a border line of peace, friendship, cooperation, and sustainable development.

Both sides touched upon the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, and safety in the East Sea, and agreed on stepping up the settlement of conflicts in the East Sea through peaceful means based on international law including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Vietnam and Laos will work with parties concerned to fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) toward establishing a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.

Both sides praised the results and significance of Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong's visit to Laos, which help elevate their traditional friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation to new heights.
