Vietnam provides emergency treatment for UN staff for the first time

Vietnam, at the request of the United Nations, provided emergency treatment for a UN staff member who became critically ill with COVID-19 while working in a nearby country. The patient was brought to Vietnam by a private plane operated by the UN Emergency Chartered Medical Evacuation Services (MEDEVAC).

After undergoing intensive treatment under strict quarantine, the patient fully recovered and was discharged from hospital. The UN staff member left Vietnam on Tuesday to return to work.

It was the first time Vietnam has ever received and treated a UN staff member as a patient under the MEDEVAC mechanism, marking a milestone in the Vietnam-UN comprehensive partnership and Vietnam’s commitment to the international battle against COVID-19.

UN leaders and representatives at different levels said they appreciate the expertise and contributions of the Vietnamese health sector, which is helping to elevate Vietnam’s global status.
