The launch of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), also referred to as “The Constitution of the Oceans”, is of great significance, representing the progressive development of international law, said Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang on Saturday.
In reply to a reporter’s question on Vietnam’s response to the 40th anniversary of UNCLOS, Hang noted that over the past 40 years, UNCLOS has provided a comprehensive regime of law and order governing the management and uses of the seas and oceans.
As a responsible member of the international community and an active member of UNCLOS, Vietnam has consistently and seriously complied with UNCLOS, persisted with the settlement of disputes at sea by peaceful means in accordance with international law, and contributed initiatives to the implementation of the Convention.
Vietnam is working hard to fine-tune its legal system governing the management and use of the sea and promote international cooperation at sea in line with UNCLOS and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Countries should continue to fully honor their obligations to UNCLOS and work together to contribute to peace, stability, legal order at sea, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight, and sustainable development of the seas and oceans, Hang said.
