Vietnam’s 60% vaccination coverage surpasses WHO target

More than 137 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in Vietnam as of Saturday morning, with one dose coverage reaching 96.8%, and the rate for two doses was 80.8% of the population aged 18 years and above, according to the Ministry of Health.

With more than 60% of its population having received their second dose, Vietnam has surpassed the target set by World Health Organization which urges each country to fully vaccinate at least 40% of its population by the end of 2021.

The COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Vietnam, which is implemented from July 2021 to April 2022, aimed to cover at least 50% of adult population in 2021 and more than 70% by January next year.

Currently, Vietnam’s first dose vaccination coverage per population rate ranks fourth in Southeast Asia after Singapore, Cambodia, and Brunei.

During a seminar hosted by the MoH on Friday, Associate Professor Ph.D Duong Thi Hong, deputy director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said that Vietnam has basically achieved herd immunity to COVID-19, adding that the vaccine coverage reduced the number of critical cases and fatalities.
