VGP – Viet Nam will issue internationally recognized driving licenses from January 1, 2015, as a member of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

The licenses will be translated into English, Russian and Chinese in addition to Vietnamese.

According to deputy director general of Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam (DRVN) Nguyen Van Quyen, Viet Nam will recognize and allow the use of internationally-recognized driving licenses granted by countries joining the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

On reverse, Vietnamese working, studying and residing abroad will be issued internationally-recognized driving licenses, which are recognized by Convention participating countries.

The Convention on Road Traffic, commonly known as the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, is an international treaty designed to facilitate international road traffic and to increase road safety by establishing standard traffic rules among the participating parties.

The convention was ratified by 73 countries at the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s Conference on Road Traffic in Vienna in 1968, and came into effect in May 1977.

Viet Nam has completed the procedures and approved to join the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, including contents on granting and recognizing the international driving license since January 1, 2015.
