Yemen asks UN envoy to propose new peace deal

The world-recognized Yemeni government has asked Ismail Ould Shaik Admad, special UN envoy to Yemen, to propose a new peace deal in accordance with Resolution 2216 of the UN Security Council, the National Dialogue outputs, and the Gulf Cooperation Council's peace initiative.

Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his administration were strongly opposed to the peace deal, which required Mr. Hadi and his Vice President to transfer their powers to a new Vice President until a new President is elected. Yemeni government officials say the ambassadors of some of the 18 countries sponsoring the Yemen peace talks have put pressure on President Hadi and his government to change their position on the peace plan.
