FBI hands over cultural artifacts, antiquities to Vietnamese Embassy

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US has received cultural artifacts and antiquities from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which discovered and seized a large collection of more than 7,000 cultural artifacts illegally held by an American citizen. The FBI took possession of the artefacts during an operation from 2013 to 2014. It is the largest single discovery of cultural property in FBI history.

A year before his death, the man agreed to relinquish these items and wished to return them to their rightful owners. With the help of experts, the FBI has managed to identify several unidentified artefacts from Vietnam, including a vase/pot, an 8-piece set of tool kit made of bronze, and a stone axe.

Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung said at the hand over ceremony, “This demonstrates the US’s goodwill and commitment to the UN conventions against trans-national organized crime. We’ll soon deliver these items to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam National Museum of History for assessment, research, and exhibition.”

Ambassador Dung said Vietnam and the US have carried out coordinated activities under a “Memorandum of Understanding on prevention and control of trans-national crimes” signed by the Ministry of Pubic Security and the FBI.

China announces fresh military drills around Chinese Taipei

China’s military announced fresh military drills on Monday in the seas and airspace around Chinese Taipei – a day after the scheduled end of its largest ever exercises to protest against last week’s visit to Taipei by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China’s Eastern Theatre Command said it would conduct joint drills focusing on anti-submarine and sea assault operations. The duration and precise location of the latest drills is not yet known, but Chinese Taipei has already eased flight restrictions near the six earlier Chinese exercise areas surrounding the island.

China’s defence ministry meanwhile maintained its diplomatic pressure on the United States, defending its shelving of military-to-military talks in protest at Pelosi’s visit.

“The current tense situation in the Taiwan Strait is entirely provoked and created by the U.S. side on its own initiative, and the U.S. side must bear full responsibility and serious consequences for this,” defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said in an online post.

Pentagon, State Department and White House officials condemned the move, describing it as an irresponsible over-reaction.

Spain recognises Vienam’s new passports, reversing earlier decision

The Spanish Embassy in Hanoi on Monday said it would accept Vietnam’s new passport following consultation with Spanish authorities. Vietnam’s new passport has already included necessary information in accordance with international regulations, the embassy said.

However, it said those who wish to apply for visa need to bring both their new passports and valid identity cards to verify their places of birth.

The embassy also warns that Spain’s visa on Vietnam’s new passport would not be valid for entry into countries which have not accepted the passports, even if those countries are part of the Schengen group.

On August 1, Spain denied visas for holders of Vietnam’s new passports because they lack information regarding places of birth.

The embassy noted that the old passports with a green cover, which show “place of birth” information and are not restricted from entry by any of the Schengen member states, will continue to be accepted normally.
