Burkina Faso army deposes president

Burkina Faso’s army said it took control of the country on Monday, deposing President Roch Kabore, dissolving the government and parliament, suspending the constitution, and closing the country’s borders.

This was announced on state television by Captain Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo, who said the takeover was carried out without violence and those detained were in a secure location. A spokesman said Kabore has signed his resignation. He has not appeared in public since shooting was reported at local military bases last Sunday.

Before the army’s statement, the African Union and the West African bloc ECOWAS condemned what they called an attempted coup in Burkina Faso, saying they will hold the military responsible for President Kabore’s safety.
