Australia provides 4.2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam

An additional 4.2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been delivered to Vietnam from Australia under an agreement with UNICEF and in partnership with the Vietnamese Ministry of Health. Three million Pfizer adult vaccine doses arrived in September in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with a further 1.2 million pediatric doses arriving in Hanoi on Monday. Australia has now provided more than 26 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam.

Australia and UNICEF also handed over  five refrigerated trucks to be stationed at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Hanoi, the Pasteur Institute in HCM City, the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang, and the Central Highlands Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Dak Lak.

These vehicles are essential to the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out and routine immunization program as they ensure that vaccines are transported safely across the country.

The Australian government provides healthcare worker training, communications campaigns, and outreach sessions to remote, hard-to-reach areas so that the most vulnerable populations are not left behind.

The Ho Chi Minh City Health Department has said it detected a second case of monkeypox at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

The 38-year-old-woman displayed symptoms of fatigue, chills, muscle pains, headaches, and coughing, as well as rashes on several body parts from September 18 whilst traveling in Dubai.

She and the first monkeypox patient in Vietnam who has recovered stayed together in the same accommodation in Dubai. After her friend was found to have the same symptoms, the first monkeypox case informed local authorities to ask for their support.

After receiving the news, local authorities isolated the patient shortly after the plane landed at Tan Son Nhat Airport and transferred her to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment. Her test results then came back positive on Wednesday. All of her close contacts are being monitored.

Vietnam’s first monkeypox patient is a 35-year-old woman who contracted the disease while visiting Dubai from July to September 22. She went to the hospital for a diagnosis on September 23 and tested positive to monkeypox 2 days later.
