Central region aids HCM city’s COVID-19 fight

Localities in Vietnam’s central region are joining forces with HCM city to combat COVID-19 which is ravaging the country’s largest economic hub. 

The city detected an all-time high of 667 COVID-19 cases over a 24-hour period, from 6am Thursday to 6am Friday.

Da Nang city sent more than 430,000 USD to support Ho Chi Minh city’s COVID-19 fight, according to Da Nang Chairman Le Trung Chinh. He said that despite being hit by COVID-19, Da Nang still wants to help other localities fight the pandemic, especially Ho Chi Minh city, where the situation is getting more complicated.

Quang Ngai province allocated 43,000 USD for HCM city. Bui Thi Quynh Van, Chairwoman of Quang Ngai’s People’s Council, said, “Though 43,000 USD is not much, we hope that the gift will help Ho Chi Minh city soon recover from the pandemic.”

Quang Nam and Quang Tri provinces also gave Ho Chi Minh City 86,000 USD and 21,000 USD, respectively.

Quang Binh province, in collaboration with the HCM city-based Saigon Co.op Mart supermarket chain, donated 20,000 meals to officials, soldiers and locals in quarantine.

As of Saturday noon, HCM city had recorded nearly 2,500 domestic cases, ranking 2nd in the total number of infections in Vietnam, after the northern province of Bac Giang.
