Countries downsize delegation for Olympic opening ceremony

– Some 50 athletes out of a total of 232 athletes from the Republic of Korea and six executives from the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee will take part in the opening ceremony for the 2020 Summer Olympics on Friday, the Committee said on Thursday. The decision was made to ensure their safety amid a resurgence of COVID-19 infections in Tokyo.

Swimmer Hwang Sun-woo and volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung will be co-flag bearers on Friday for the symbolic opening event.

Canada and Australia announced the same day that only a few of their athletes will attend the Olympic opening ceremony.
