“Hanoi 1972 – Aspiration for peace” exhibition launched

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the victory “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the air” (December 1972 – December 2022), on December 27, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports opened the exhibition ” Hanoi 1972 – Aspiration for Peace” at the Hanoi Museum.  The exhibition introduces more than 300 images, documents and artifacts of the Hanoi Museum; archives and witnesses about the fight against the US imperialism of Hanoi’s army and people 50 years ago with 3 thematic areas: Silence, Confrontation and Peace.

The exhibition space recreates many locations that were heavily bombed (Kham Thien Street, Bach Mai Hospital), wartime classrooms, people’s bunkers, among others, in which, there are many famous artifacts on display such as an alarm speaker manufactured by Hanoi Mechanical Company in the 50s of the twentieth century to warn people to seek shelter when there was an incoming American airplane, a 250kg bomb dropped on Kham Thien street but did not explode, among others

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Tran Thi Van Anh emphasized that this is an opportunity for Hanoi residents and tourists to better understand the fierceness of the war and the bravery of the Hanoi people and army in fighting, especially during 12 days and nights against the B-52 bombers to protect the capital and defend the country.

“We have the right to be proud of having created a unique and historical feat in the twentieth century, a brilliant epic in the history of the Vietnamese nation against foreign invaders and defending the country,” said Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Tran Thi Van Anh.

A representative of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports stressed that this is a victory of justice, a symbol of patriotism, national pride, strength of national unity, the pinnacle of wisdom and bravery of Vietnam; through which  the revolutionary heroism of Vietnamese people brightens.

At the same time, the victory has encouraged and promoted the faith for progressive mankind in the world to fight for peace, national independence, democracy, and social justice.

Attending the exhibition, Dang Thi Ty (75 years old), was touched when she saw her image at the time of being a militia and member of the self-defense force in Dan Phuong commune on the battlefield to protect Phung dam in 1972.

” At that time, I had just won the title of Grassroots Emulation Fighter, so I was photographed by a reporter of the People’s newspaper. I still have the picture with the stamp cut from that newspaper. But I did not think that my pictures are displayed here,” Ty said.

Talking about the arduous days of working and fighting to protect the homeland, Ty said: “In 1966, I was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam. Since then, I had joined the militia and self-defense force. We young people at that time were not afraid of anything as the only thing in our mind was to work hard and defend the country. Today, coming to the exhibition, I am very happy because this is a meaningful activity to educate the young generation about national history.”
