Hanoi Mayor receives British Ambassador

On September 20, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh received Iain Frew – the newly appointed British Ambassador to Vietnam.  

At the meeting, Chairman of the City People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh welcomed Ambassador to Vietnam and wished the him a successful and fruitful term, contributing to the development of bilateral relations.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the City People’s Committee also expressed condolences for the loss of the United Kingdom when Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 9.

Chairman of the City People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh assessed that over the past time, Vietnam – UK relations have developed in many fields, especially in economy, culture, education, with effective investment projects, while outstanding cooperation in cultural exchange and education contribute to boosting the number of Vietnamese students in the UK. The Chairman of the City People’s Committee expects that cooperation between Hanoi and UK partners will grow further in the future. In particular, it is necessary to strengthen the exchange of delegations at all levels between Hanoi and UK localities, promoting specific cooperation not only in the private sector but also in the public sector.

Referring to the Capital Planning to 2030, with a vision to 2050, the head of the City People’s Committee expects experienced international partners, including the UK, to share experiences and expand investments in urban transport, saying this is a priority field for the city.

Thanking the warm welcome and agreeing with the sharing from the City’s leader, Ambassador Iain Frew said that in order to promote the relationship between the UK and Vietnam, the two sides need to continue to build on the foundation of the traditional cooperation such as trade, education, and at the same time, towards other potential areas such as energy transition, climate change and national cooperation on security.

In the traditional field of cooperation, which is education, the UK side hopes to continue to build stronger cooperation, strengthen student exchanges, coordinate with educational institutions in Vietnam in general, the Hanoi in particular. This process needs support and facilitation from the Hanoi government, the Ambassador emphasized.
