On November 14, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, Chairman of the City People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh received Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon.  

At the meeting, Chairman of the City People’s Committee was pleased to welcome Kate Brown and the Oregon delegation to Hanoi, and at the same time, highly appreciated the investment activities of Oregon in Vietnam as well as in Hanoi. Reviewing the development achievements of the capital in recent years, the Chairman of the City People’s Committee said that Hanoi is a major cultural, economic and political center of Vietnam. As the capital of a thousand years of civilization, Hanoi will promote its advantages in many fields, especially culture and education. With a population of nearly 9 million people, the city is trying to solve urban problems such as traffic and environment, aiming at improving the quality of human resources and living standards for the people.

With this goals, the city is considering adjusting the capital planning to 2050, focusing on developing the general functional structure, solving the challenges of urban traffic, environmental protection, development orientation. For the future development, the city also has many advantages in terms of human resources and tourism development resources.

On that basis, Chairman of the City People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh expressed his wish that cooperation between Hanoi and the US in general, and with Oregon state in particular, will continue to develop further in many fields such as education, health, culture, urban development, transportation, among others. Chairman of the City People’s Committee hoped that Governor Kate Brown’s visit would be a valuable opportunity to open up cooperation opportunities between the US and Vietnam as well as Hanoi and Oregon in particular.

Governor Kate Brown concurred with Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh, saying that Hanoi’s young population is a great lever for developing the economy, education and culture. According to Governor Kate Brown, Oregon wishes to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam and Hanoi. Currently, state partners such as Portland University, Intel Corporation, Nike… have built a practical cooperative relationship between Vietnam for mutual benefit. In addition, the Oregon State National Guard and the Vietnam National Committee for Search and Rescue (VINASARCOM) have just celebrated 10 years of cooperation in incident and disaster response and search and rescue. The Governor of Oregon proposed that the two sides further strengthen cooperation on this issue in the coming time.

Expressing her pleasure over the past time Portland University has cooperated well with Vietnam, Governor Kate Brown wishes to promote extensive educational cooperation, two-way student exchange to have more Vietnamese students come to study at the University of Portland and Oregon State students to Vietnam to study and exchange.
