North Korea fires short-range ballistic missile

North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile towards the sea off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula on Sunday, the South Korean military said.

According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) the short-range ballistic missile was fired from around the Tongchang-ri area in North Pyongan province.

Japan's Defense Ministry has said that North Korea has fired what appears to be a ballistic missile, likely splashed into the sea outside of Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

North Korea's latest launch came just three days after the leaders of Japan and South Korea held a high-level meeting in Tokyo, where they agreed to strengthen security cooperation to deal with threats.

On Thursday, Pyongyang test-fired intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-17, its second ICBM test this year. Pyongyang's missile launches came as South Korea and the United States are currently in the middle of 11-day joint drills known as Freedom Shield, their largest in five years.
