Poland to close border checkpoint with Belarus

Poland will close a key border crossing with Belarus until further notice, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said Thursday, as relations between the two countries sink to a new low. Bobrowniki, 200 kilometers northeast of Warsaw, is a key crossing point between Poland and Belarus. The already tense relations between the neighbors were further strained on Wednesday when a journalist of Polish origin was sentenced in Belarus to eight years in prison.

Polish authorities are preparing to expand the list of sanctions to Belarus, Kaminski said. Neither the Belarus Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Embassy of Belarus in Warsaw have made any comment.
