Agriculture should be a mainstay in the national economy: Minister

– The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development called on localities on Tuesday to increase support for connectivity and cooperation among cooperatives nationwide to improve the collective economy as Vietnam speeds up agriculture restructuring. Minister Le Minh Hoan told a meeting to review 10 years of the Law on Cooperatives that strengthening cooperatives  will help reinforce connectivity, preserve culture and the environment in rural areas, and maintain agriculture’s key role in the national economy in difficult times.

“Cooperatives may not generate high revenue and economic growth but they provide the foundation for farmers to cooperate and share agricultural models and products. They can mobilize community resources which, when combined with State support, create a multidimensional power,” said Minister Hoan.

Since 2013, the number of agriculture cooperatives has increased by 800 each year. Vietnam is expected to have more than 18,000 such cooperatives by the end of this year.
