PM Chinh receives WB Director General, US business leaders

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Director General of the World Bank (WB) Axel Van Trotsenburg and leaders of some US corporations on May 11 (local time) during his working visit to the US.

Meeting with the WB leader, PM Chinh proposed that Vietnam and the WB focus their cooperation on energy transition and digital transformation; giant transport infrastructure projects such as expressways and coastal roads; projects coping with climate changes in the Mekong Delta and central regions; poverty reduction; and improving healthcare capacity.

He said Vietnam will soon work with the WB in the country to implement specific projects and Vietnam will support the WB to implement pilot policies to ensure the most efficiency of loans. The PM also suggested the two sides continue to simplify procedures and prevent corruption in the implementation of projects.

WB Director General Axel said the bank wants to enhance cooperation with Vietnam during the post-pandemic recovery and development process, particularly in the context that the global recovery is meeting difficulties due to tensions and conflicts in some areas, materials’ price hike and increasing inflation in many countries while national resources reduced during the pandemic prevention and control.

Stressing the viewpoint of multilateral cooperation to deal with challenges, he said Vietnam needs to balance between the huge energy demand for development and sustainable development requirements.

Agreeing with the PM on the fields of cooperation, he affirmed that the WB attaches great importance to supporting Vietnam in the process of becoming an upper-middle-income country and reaching higher steps in the production value.

Receiving Marc Allen, Chief Strategy Officer and Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development of Boeing Company, PM Chinh said Vietnam will focus on strongly developing the aviation sector in the future and Boeing can participate in developing the aviation ecosystem of Vietnam.

The Government leader spoke highly of the cooperation and support from Boeing and voiced his support for the company’s plan to expand facilities in Vietnam to supply fuels and seek cooperation opportunities in technology.

He proposed the company to open maintenance centres in Vietnam, have long-term cooperation policies as well as provide specific preferential policies to help Vietnamese businesses overcome this difficult time, and make important contribution to promoting the cooperation between Vietnam and the US.

Later the same day, PM Chinh received leaders of the Asia Group, Blackstone, GenX and AES, who expressed their interest in energy transition projects in Vietnam and in investing to support Vietnam realise its COP26 goals in coping with climate change.

The PM applauded their energy transition proposals and briefed them on a number of issues relating to Vietnam’s energy development orientations and electricity planning. He asked them to focus research and investment on wind power, solar power and tidal energy which are energy sources of huge potential in Vietnam./.

Party official pays working visit to Israel

Politburo member, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA) and Chairman of the Central Theory Council Nguyen Xuan Thang is paying a working visit to Israel, meeting many local leaders.

On May 11, his first day in the nation, Thang met Speaker of the Knesset Mickey Levy, during which the official expressed his delight at the growing friendship and cooperation between the nations in the past time.

Thang suggested measures to further boosting the ties such as increasing delegation exchanges at all levels and collaboration in potential sectors; improving the effectiveness of their inter-governmental committee and ministerial-level cooperation; and stepping up academic exchange to facilitate joint research and technological development.

He suggested Israel support and transfer technology for Vietnam in the fields of startups, digital transformation, renewable energy, IT, and AI; and asked for the acceleration of the signing of free trade and labour cooperation agreements between the countries. Thang’s schedule on May 11 also included meetings with Israeli Economy and Industry Minister Orna Barbivai, Chairwoman of the Israel-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group Michal Shir Segman; and Minister of Religious Services Matan Kahana; as well as a visit to the Vietnamese Embassy./.

PM meets with Cambodian counterpart in US

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on May 11 (local time) on the occasion of attending the Special ASEAN-US Summit and his working visit to the US and the United Nations headquarters.

During the meeting, the Vietnamese Government leader highly valued Cambodia’s role and contributions as ASEAN Chair, including promoting the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on the situation in Myanmar.

PM Chinh also congratulated Cambodia on positive results it achieved in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and fully reopening the economy, expressing his belief that Cambodia will successfully organise the commune/ward elections in early June as well as the National Assembly elections in 2023.

For his part, Cambodian PM Hun Sen spoke highly of Vietnam’s achievements in COVID-19 response, and socio-economic recovery and development, saying that he believes the Vietnamese Government and people will continue to achieve even greater achievements in its doi moi (renewal) process and international integration.

The Cambodian leader also thanked Vietnam for supporting Cambodia in the role as ASEAN Chair 2022.

The two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the positive developments in the bilateral cooperation in recent times, especially the maintenance of meetings and high level delegation exchanges, as well as cooperation mechanisms in all channels.

Two-way trade kept a positive growth momentum, hitting 3.37 billion USD in the first quarter of 2022, up 24.9 percent year-on-year.

In order to continue promoting the “good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive, sustainable and long-term cooperation” between the two countries in the coming time, the two PMs agreed to promote the exchange of high-level delegations during the Vietnam – Cambodia, Cambodia – Vietnam Friendship Year 2022 and jointly organise meaningful activities to celebrate the 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations (June 24, 1967-2022).

The two sides will make efforts to maintain trade-investment development; promote tourism; effectively use the border gate system to facilitate trade and people-to-people exchanges; uphold the achievement of demarcation and marker planting on about 84 percent of the land border and continue the work on the remaining 16 percent; and jointly build a border of peace and friendship between the two countries.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also expressed his thanks and wished that the Cambodian Government would continue to pay attention to and create conditions for the community of Vietnamese-origin Cambodians to strengthen their legal status and stabilise their lives in Cambodia.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese Government leader respectfully conveyed the regards of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to Prime Minister Hun Sen and other senior leaders of Cambodia. Vietnam seeks cooperation with US to develop healthy stock market

Vietnam expects the US to share its experience in developing the financial market in a healthy, safe, and transparent manner, to contribute to national macroeconomic stability, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told the US Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen on May 11 (US time) during his visit to the country.

On the basis of the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the US, cooperation between the two countries in economy, trade, finance and currency has made positive progress, PM Chinh said at a meeting with Secretary Yellen while in the US attending the US-ASEAN summit at the invitation of US President Joe Biden.

He emphasised that Vietnam wishes to build an independent and self-reliant economy with sustainable development and deep integration, adding that stabilisation of the macroeconomy plays a very important role.

PM Chinh thanked the US for cooperation and support in managing and stabilising the foreign exchange market, contributing to Vietnam’s macro stability.

He also mentioned the complex impacts on economies stemming from global instabilities such as strategic competition, pandemic, climate change, conflict and economic development, and armed conflicts.

In response to these issues, he noted, it is necessary to uphold internationalism and multilateralism with a balanced and just approach.

PM Chinh added that each country needs to build an independent and self-reliant economy derived from its own internal resources and strengths. The Vietnamese leader proposed that the US Government and US Department of the Treasury closely support and cooperate with Vietnam in economic development, handling global challenges, including energy transition, and fulfilling commitments at COP26.

He also suggested the US side to cooperate with Vietnam to build regional economic mechanisms, and stabilise trade relations and supply chains.

US Secretary of the Treasury Yelle affirmed that the US is willing to deepen economic – trade – investment relations between the two countries, including cooperation in banking and finance.

She said she highly appreciates Vietnam’s flexible exchange rate management and its consistency in pursuing the goal of controlling inflation and stabilising the macro-economy.

Secretary Yelle affirmed that, through global and regional financial institutions, the US will coordinate with developed countries to support developing countries, including Vietnam, in the areas of infrastructure, infectious disease prevention and control, energy transition, and climate change response.

She added that the US is willing to share experiences and support Vietnam in capacity building and mechanisms to effectively develop capital and real estate markets./.

Vietnam’s sappers conduct field reconnaissance in Abyei

Vietnam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 1 participating in peacekeeping mission at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) have recently deployed field reconnaissance to prepare for the rainy season and build barracks. Engineering Unit Rotation 1 was officially launched on November 17, 2021. Together with level 2 field hospitals, the team will contribute to providing humanitarian assistance activities, helping UN Peacekeeping Missions to carry out their tasks, maintaining peace, rebuilding the country, and bringing peaceful and stable life to indigenous countries.

This is the first time Vietnam has sent an engineer team to the UN peacekeeping operations. It is the unit-level formation with the largest number of members ever participating in UN peacekeeping missions: 184 soldiers (including 21 women).
