US suspends flights by China carriers

The US government said on Friday it would suspend 44 China-bound flights from the United States by four Chinese carriers in response to the Chinese government’s decision to suspend some US carrier flights over COVID-19 concerns.

China still maintains strict border protection measures, including cutting back on incoming international flights and allowing a flight route to be suspended if there are too many COVID-19 cases recorded on flights. China previously barred some inbound flights by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines after passengers on earlier flights tested positive for the virus.

The US Department of Transportation said that the measures disrupted the operations of US airlines even though they have ensured all safety procedures when operating flights. The US order limits flights between January 30 and March 29 by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.

Sub-lineage of Omicron variant spreads to 40 countries

The UK Health Security Agency on Friday designated a sub-lineage of the dominant and highly transmissible Omicron coronavirus variant as a variant under investigation, saying it could have a growth advantage, Reuters reported.

BA.2, which does not have the specific mutation seen with Omicron that can help to easily distinguish it from Delta, is being investigated but has not been designated a variant of concern.

Britain has sequenced 426 cases of the BA.2 sub-lineage, and the UKHSA said that while there was uncertainty around the significance of the changes to the viral genome, early analysis suggested an increased growth rate compared to the original Omicron lineage, BA.1.

UKHSA said that 40 countries had reported BA.2 sequences, with the most samples reported in Denmark, followed by India, Britain, Sweden and Singapore.

Lavrov told reporters after the talks that the dialogue between the two countries will continue regarding Russia’s security proposals on legally binding security guarantees and the US has promised to give Russia a written reply to its security demands next week.
