Canada calls for compliance with UNCLOS to resolve issues in East Sea

Global Affairs Canada issued a statement on Monday on the 5th anniversary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA)’s ruling on the Philippines’ case against China related to disputes in the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam)

Global Affairs Canada, the department that manages Canada’s diplomatic and consular relations, reiterates the need for all parties to comply with the ruling, stating that the decision is a significant milestone and a useful basis for peacefully resolving disputes in the waters.

Canada called on all states to live up to previous commitments made in the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of the Parties in the East Sea. The country voiced its support for lawful commerce, navigation and overflight rights, as well as the sovereign rights and jurisdiction of coastal states in the waters, exercised in accordance with international law, including the UNCLOS.
