China, Russia oppose a public meeting of UNSC on North Korea

In response to North Korea’s fifth missile test in a week, the US called for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Britain, France, Albania, Norway and Ireland joined the United States in making the request, but China and Russia said they oppose a public meeting, arguing that the actions of the Council should be conducive to easing the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

There is no word yet on whether the Council will hold a meeting to discuss this issue.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned North Korea’s missile launch over Japan as a “reckless act” and a violation of Security Council resolutions. Guterres called on North Korea to resume negotiations.
