COVID-19 uptick in many places

The coronavirus had caused 494 million infections and 6.2 million deaths as of Wednesday noon, according to worldometers.info.

New infections are soaring in New York, driven by the Omicron sub-variant BA.2.

South Korea’s new coronavirus cases surpassed 266,000 on Tuesday, doubling the figure a day earlier.

In Thailand, a senior health official said a parcel delivery man may be infected with a new COVID-19 variant never before detected in Thailand. Genome sequencing suggested the 34-year-old man may be infected with the XJ variant, a combination of the BA.1 and BA.2 sub-variants which was first detected in Finland not long ago.
