Djokovic ends Fucsovics run to reach 10th Wimbledon semi-final

Playing in his 50th Grand Slam quarter-final, Novak Djokovic recorded a century of tour-level wins on grass as he suffocated the challenge of Marton Fucsovics with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals on Wednesday.
In his 10th Wimbledon semi-final, and 41st across all four majors, the Serbian will meet Canadian 10th seed Denis Shapovalov, who outplayed Karen Khachanov in five sets 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-1 6-4.

* Matteo Berrettini became only the second Italian man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals after powering past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-3 on Wednesday (Jul 7). In his second Grand Slam semi-final, following a run to the last four at the 2019 US Open, Berrettini will face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz who took out eight-times champion Roger Federer.

* Jordan Pickford became the England goalkeeper with the longest spell without conceding a goal on Wednesday (Jul 7), narrowly breaking a record stretching back to the Three Lions’ triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign. The goalkeeper surpassed Gordon Banks’s milestone of 720 minutes during England’s Euro 2020 semi-final victory over Denmark, as they reached their first major tournament final since 1966 with a 2-1 win after extra time.

* A last-gasp addition to his team, Mark Cavendish rolled back the years as he claimed his 31st Tour de France stage victory on Tuesday – five years after his last success on the world’s greatest cycling race. The Briton is now three victories away from the Tour’s all-time stage win record held by Belgian great Eddy Merckx.

* Football fans will soon be able to attend Singapore Premier League (SPL) matches for the first time in more than two months when the 2021 season resumes, provided they meet certain COVID-19 requirements. A negative COVID-19 test result or proof of completed vaccination – either the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty or Moderna shots – will be required for entry, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said in a media release on Wednesday (Jul 7).

* Luis Filipe Vieira, the president of Portugal’s biggest football club Benfica, was detained on Wednesday, public broadcaster RTP said, as part of an investigation into alleged tax fraud and money laundering.

* Former Formula One driver and Argentine politician Carlos Reutemann, who competed for more than a decade at the top of world motorsports, died on Wednesday (Jul 7) aged 79. Reutemann had undergone surgery in New York for a hepatic tumor in 2017 and struggled to regain full health.
