FMs of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia meet ahead of Mekong-Lancang meeting

Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on Sunday met with his Lao, Thai, and Cambodian counterparts as they are attending the 7th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers Meeting in Bagan, Myanmar. At the meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, the two men agreed on further coordination to well serve high-level delegation exchanges and effectively implement cooperation agreements. They pledged to jointly organize activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations and the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. These activities will culminate in a commemorative event to be held in the two countries’ capitals on July 18, 2022.

At the meeting with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, Minister Son suggested that the two sides coordinate in organizing celebrations of the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership in 2023, promote trade growth toward balance and mutual benefit, and soon achieve the bilateral trade target of 25 billion USD. Both agreed to promote exchanges of high-level visits and implement cooperation mechanisms, including the 9th Vietnam-Thailand political consultation and soon restore commercial flights as well as open new routes to create more favorable conditions for tourism and trade.

At the meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn, both agreed to coordinate well in preparing for high-level visits and in organizing the remaining commemorative activities of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year 2022.
